“Everybody survive but few truly live”
I don’t know exactly who pronounced this phrase or where I heard it, but this is precisely the point. The days go by and you, like Walter Mitty, delude yourself to alive just because you have a beating heart, you close to your most intimate dreams and stay there, alone. You don’t live in the real world, but in a world of dreams and fantasies, a world safe because harmless, because it’s you who control and decide the rules. A world where you feel protected…and invincible.
All of us at times are blocked from doing something simply because of fear, give up doing what we really would like to do because we’re afraid from failure before even groped. Swap life experiences with daydreams, because dreams are safer and if they go wrong, they are still only dreams. Instead, when it comes to life is different.
The real world is just a parallel life. You traded your real life of daydreams. Yes, because the world, the real one, can hurt you. Because in life you cannot always afford to make mistakes, because in life you cannot play and delude yourself that alls is well, you cannot just close your eyes and pretend that the problems are gone. “If I close my eyes, I’m not here any more” you cannot do this little game in real life. You can no longer believe in fairy tales. But above all, life is a responsibility.
All this scares Walter, like all of us at time, and led him to choose to live in dreams. So, while is big and secret love is in front of him, he prefers to imagine to be a superhero who jumped down from a burning building, winning in this way her heart. But this is only in his head. Just him, no one else.
While life shakes him back to this world, she has already left. Opportunity burned. Yeah, this movie teaches us an opportunity is like a butterfly land on your hand, you have to grasp it immediately, because it will not stay there waiting forever; an opportunity that presents itself to your face, as well as a butterfly alights on the hand, will not return.
Walter is one that in everything he does takes commitment. He direct part in Greenland in search of an old friend photographer because he has to recover a lost photo that was chosen as the cover photo of the magazine last week that he works for is closing. During his trip he will meet so many people and will undergo a transformation, in fact, he will become resourceful and courageous man who he always wanted to be.
At the end when he found his friend, so many things will be changed and he will have already learned the basic lessons of life, but the one most important, the most beautiful, the one essential, it will be the latter to teach him.
“Live the moment”. This is the secret to a full life. The quintessence of everything. His photographer friend gives him a different view of the world. Do not get distracted by external objects or thoughts, live in the “here and now”, always. Immerse yourself in the emotions you feel and relish it, taste it and grab every detail of everything, every variation.
I loved this scene, because it was turned to me, but also to you, to all of us. Today we are too in a hurry, a thousand thoughts there pounding our head, we are always busy thinking about what “we have to do” in the future, what we’ve done in the past and do not worry about instead of what we want to do now, in the present. In the only time when we have power.
Walter is also a romantic man, he is in fact in love with his work colleague, Sheryl Melhoff, who dreams of winning in different ways. But he only dreams, in fact. The relationship between Walter and Sheryl does so reflect. He thinks that to win her must be converted into some kind of superhero comics, when instead he has only to be himself. Not the Walter scared that lives in dreams, but the real Walter, the tenacious and determined, who lives life to the fullest.
Walter lives in dreams because he believes he can not be and not be able to get what he wants in his real life. Changes his mind during his travels. He can be the superhero who jumps out of a helicopter in the glacial ocean from the north, maybe the intrepid castaway who fight against a shark, or a lone climber and tireless who wins the peaks of the mountains. He always has been, he simply did not know of it.

He always has been, he simply did not know of it. Although we all have our roles and we are the protagonists of our lives. We can write our story and decide who to be. Just throw. Do not be afraid to act like Walter did. To risk.
“Stop to dream and begin to live”
I think this is the slogan that best sums up the entire movie, start to live in the true sense of the word, and so is also how I want to live. Like, in my opinion, everyone should do!
We fight to win a reality that is more beautiful than the dream.
